Grants come and go, as we all know. For the most part, these grants are ongoing funding opportunities that may vary somewhat year by year. If you think we've missed something, please use the KNE Feedback form to tell us about it.

  1. The California Department of Education has information on grants, not all of which are listed on the CDE funding page. Some information about technology grants can be found on the Education Technology page. Try using this keyword search which will take you to a results page on their site.

California Teleconnect Fund (aka DAS): established on October 25, 1996 by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and funded by the California Teleconnect Fund surcharge, this program provides deep technology discounts to Public or Nonprofit Schools, public libraries, Hospitals and Health Clinics, and Community Based Organizations.
  3. Community Technology Foundation of California: 134 community organizations and SBC dedicated to bringing both existing and new communications technologies to traditionally underserved communities. Underserved communities accept proposals year round. Awards are $25,000 to $100,000.
  4. Digital California Project (DCP): headed by CENIC, millions of dollars are being funneled into California’s statewide university network, 4CNET, to expand and provide K-12 schools and research institutions access to a variety of resources. No deadlines yet.
  5. Digital High Schools (DHS): California State funding : http://www.cde.ca.gov/digitalhigh Dollars go to technology and staff development to integrate computers, networks, training, and software and achieve computer literacy. Grants are awarded over a 4-year period. Grades 9-12. This is the last year (2001)
  6. California Civil Liberties Public Education Program (CCLPEP): Begun in 1999, its purpose is to provide competitive grants for public educational activities and the development of educational materials to ensure that the events surrounding the exclusion, forced removal and incarceration of civilians and permanent resident aliens of Japanese ancestry will be remembered and so that causes and circumstances of this and similar events may be illuminated and understood.
  7. Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA): federal program handled in California by the California State Library. Availalbe to all libraries including school and public library. New ideas and demonstration projects are the targets for this type of funding. The State Librarian is constantly seeking model projects to test with the idea of applying successful projects statewide. Projects run October to Sept.
  8. Prop 14 Library Bond Act : Provides money for new library construction and renovation including telecomm, electrical, and safe environment. Local match of 35 percent required. Begins in 2002. Awards from $50,000 to $20 million. Other library funding opportunities are listed on the Service to Libraries page under Funding.
