Introduction
The First World War, which lasted from 1914 to 1918, was known at the time as the Great War. It invloved more countries than any previous war; it introduced new technology into fighting; and it caused destruction on an unequaled scale. It was total war, involving the mobilization not just of vast armies but of whole nations.

More than 65 million men fought in World War I; over 8 million were killed. In addition, nearly 9 million civilians died - from starvation, disease, artillery fire, and air raids. In France and Belgium, where most of the fighting occurred, the war destroyed 300,000 houses, 6,000 factories, 1,000 miles of rail lines, and 112 coal mines. Even for those who survived, the cost of war was devastating.

When the war finally ended, it was only natural for people to ask, 'Why did this happen?'
