Introduction
Imagine being lost at sea with only a raft to keep you from drowning in the deep waters or, worse yet, becoming dinner for the sharks!

Do you think you could survive alone on a deserted island? Could you live with a total stranger? These are just a few of the concerns with which young Phillip must come to terms.

'The Cay,' by Theodore Taylor, is the suspenseful story of a young boy who is thrust into an unfamiliar environment and is forced to grow up quickly. Phillip's very survival depends upon his learning a new way of living and to respect the power of nature. He jeopardizes his life each time he forgets past lessons, but those lapses-whether from carelessness, fear, or despair-make Phillip a very believable character.

'The Cay' is a realistic fiction story set in the Caribbean in the midst of World War ll. This award-winning novel remains a powerful classic of prejudice, love, and survival. To familiarize yourself with the location of the different places, people, events, and terms that are mentioned in this book and to help you with your research paper, you will visit various internet sites on this hotlist.
