A Hotlist on Digital Storytelling -
Abstract, Concrete, General, and Specific - This excellent discussion of these terms that are vital to our work in College Writing was written by John Friedlander of Southwest Tennessee Community College. This whole site is useful and contains interactive quizzes.
Bottled Water: Is it worth it? -
Glossary of Usage: Index of Commonly Confused Words - Check this site for clarification on Bear Words--and more. It includes a quiz you can take to test your knowledge.
Highly Irregular - A short article from Time online that also contains examples of the 'irregular verb' pattern for the Point of View assignment.
LMC Senior Exit Projects -
Library of Poetry Contest - Check here for guidelines to this poetry contest for K-12 students.
Multigenre Research Project Website with sample projects - Check out the site of the man who made multigenre projects famous--Tom Romano (with whom, BTW, Mrs. Campbell has had dinner, just to drop a name....)
Painting with the Brushstrokes Online Resources - This PowerPoint presentation details Harry Noden's brushstrokes--particples, participial phrases, absolutes, and more. Click on the screen to advance to the next slide. Students will want to click quickly through the boring 'teacher stuff' to get to the brushstroke info several slides into the presentation.

Poetry

American Life in Poetry - Ted Kooser, U. S. Poet Laureate from 2004-2006, created this site with poems by contemporary American poets and a short columns about each poem.
Favorite Poem Project - This site was started by Robert Pinsky, U.S. Poet Laureate
How to Read a Poem (and Fall in Love with Poetry) - 'Curious about poetry, but don't know where or how to begin? We've reprinted the first chapter from the book How to Read a Poem by Edward Hirsch. Its 16 sections provide strategies for reading poems, and each section has plenty of links to examples of poems in our archive to illustrate the points.' (from the Poetry Foundation Web site)

Library of Congress: Poetry - Among the rich resources on this site is a timeline of Poet Laureates.
Metapoetry - An individual's collection of poems about poetry and writing poetry. The prefix 'meta' here refers to metacognition--which Dictionary.com's 21st Century Lexicon defines as 'awareness and understanding one's thinking and cognitive processes; thinking about thinking.'
Modern American Poetry - An Online Journal and Multimedia Companion to the Anthology of Modern American Poetry (Oxford University Press, 2000) put up by the Enfglish Dept. at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
PENNsound - A collection of recordings of poets reading their poems as well as recorded discussions about poems and poetry. Click on 'Column Archive' for the list of poems. Download the sound files, then copy the link, click 'File' and 'Open' on an audio player like RealPlayer, paste in the link and listen.
Poetry 180 - 180 poems selected by past Poet Laureate Billy Collins for use in secondary schools

Poetry Daily - Excellent source of contemporary poems. Go to the archive link at the bottom of the page for a list of poems, poets, and first lines.
Poetry Foundation - The Poetry Foundation publishes 'Poetry' magazine, probably the premiere poetry journal in the country. Check out the Archive section--the Poetry Tool allows you to search in a number of ways for poems and the Reading Guides are excellent.
Poets on Screen - 'The Poets on Screen collection showcases contemporary poets reading selections of their own work and their favorite classic poems.'
Poets.org - 'The Academy of American Poets was founded in 1934 to support American poets at all stages of their careers and to foster the appreciation of contemporary poetry.' (from the website)
Representative Poetry Online - Excellent site put up by the University of Toronto. Poems from all time periods. Good keyword search as well as concordance search--which finds all the poems in the collection with each occurance of a word or part of a word.
Verse Daily - 'Verse Daily is an independently owned daily publication of quality poetry on the worldwide web. By republishing from fine literary magazines and books of poetry one new poem each day, Verse Daily is working hard to promote poets and their publishers while providing a wealth of excellent poetry to the public free of charge.' Writer's Almanac from American Public Media - Garrison Keillor hosts this daily site with bits of literary info and poems. Go to the 'Archive' link in the upper right corner of the page for a week's worth of poetry.

Grammar

'I'm Firm, You're Obstinate...' - Examples of the 'Point of Veiw' assignment, a form Bertrand Russell is credited with starting when he conjugated what he called an 'irregular verb': 'I am firm; you are obstinate; he is a pig-headed fool.'
About.com: Grammar and Composition - An excellent site with too many valuable articles to list. Check it out!
Grammar Girl - Podcasts you can subscribe to that cover grammar questions in an entertaining way.
Grammar, Punctuation, Spelling - A section of the Owl On-Line Writing Lab at Purdue University that explains points of grammar and also contains exercises with answers. The interactive quizzes weren't working when I tried them.
Guide to Grammar and Writing - This site sponsored by the Capital Community College Fund of Hartford, CT, contains lots of interactive quizzes and exercises. It has a particularly good section on conjunctions.
Tongue Untied - A good site with a well organized table of contents to choose from.
Top Five Tips to Cut the Clutter - An excellent article to help you tighten your writing. Be sure to click on links that look interesting within this site--lots and lots of good stuff here.

Short Stories

Creative Writing - An Awesome Library page full of links to sites for writers--mostly background resources, though--not as many short stories to read.
Flash Fiction Carnival 2008 - This is a blog where people write flash ficiton to a common theme offered each month. You can join or simply read and comment on posted works.
Flash Fiction Online - Online magazine of and about flash fiction.
Flash Fiction by Ian Hocking - A weekly flash fiction podcast. Some may contain profanity.
Flash What? A Quick Look at Flash Fiction - Short, informative article on an interesting writing site. Offers some good links at the end of the article to other sites and books.
Genres of Writing - Another page of the Owl On-Line Writing Lab at Purdue University site. This one has extensive lists of online writing resources.
READ Short Stories Online - Lots of classic short stories--remember to choose stories written in contemporary language if that is part of the assignment.
Short Stories at East of the Web - Plenty of short stories to choose from with short blurbs introducing them.
Short Stories to Read Online - Stories here are republished from the Fish Anthologies and previous years of the Fish Short Story Prize--no, they are not about fishing, Fish is the name of the publisher.
Teen Ink - A publication with teen writing in all genres--be sure you are reading from the fiction section if you are assigned to read short stories.
Vestal Review - A flash fiction online magazine.

AAEC Political Cartoons - Collections of current political cartoons
About.com Humor Columists - Links to many humor columists through About.com.
Art Gliner Center for Humor Studies--Humor Essays - These are essays--not tons of choices, but some might be useful.
Art Gliner Center for Humor Studies--Links - This is the same site--obviously--but the page lists links to other sites, many of which are more academic considerations of humor.
Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor --Contest - This is a link with student and teacher contest-winning essays. I would accept these as published for the purposes of the 3/5 assignment.
Cartoons on Philosophy - In case thinking gets too exhausting...
Comic Generator--Read, Write, and Think - This site is put up by educational organizations, so it's more likely to be usable by and acceptable to a wider audience. There a a zillion comic generators out there on the web now. Find one and use it for your project--or draw your own.
Daryl Cagle's Professional Cartoonists Index - The Daily Updating Political Cartoons section
Daryl Cagle's lessons on political cartoons - A good spot to get some background to several political cartoons and practice ananlyzing them
Dave Barry.com - More Dave Barry columns--this one is his own site.
Funny Times Contributors Links - Many of these links are for cartoonists, but some are essayists as well.
Funny Times Magazine - Go to the link on the side for the Cartoon Playground. You'll find a cartoon generator that allows you to create your own cartoons. It has a good selection of components to use. DISCLAIMER: Much that you'll find on this site is quite strongly partisan and some items will contain profanity. At school I had trouble downloading the Flash version needed for this, but it worked fine at home.
