Introduction

Here you are on the computer! Can you believe that you now have the opportunity to use the computer and do some fun investigation during Social Studies? Way to go! Okay. Here's the deal. There's a lot of great information about what we're currently studying...about Hunters and Gatherers. Your goal is a California State Standard 6.1 which is... to be able to describe the hunter-gatherer societies, inclulding the development of tools and the use of fire. Your job is to also gain a better understanding of archaeology. Check out the websites that are listed and be a detective to find answers to my questions. You may work with a partner or two to practice your teamwork. We all know that two heads are better than one! Type your answers into a Microsoft Word document and save and print your work when done. Get your brain warmed up and good luck on this new adventure!





Questions

  1. What is a better term for 'hunting and gathering?'

  2. Describe at least one difference between the coastal hunter-gatherers and the hunter-gatherers in the karoo.

  3. -Read over the instructions and rules for the game. List 2 things that will help you during the game.
    List 1 question to ask to clarify the game.

  4. -Was Lucy more like an ape or more like us?
    -Explain why you chose your answer.

  5. First, go the section called Specialist Areas. Read the articles, do the activities, and the quiz.
    -Tools & Weapons - Describe what a 'bow drill' was and how it was used.
    - What tools encouraged experimentation with drilling techniques?
    -What is the purpose of an archaeological theme park?
    -How can archaeological evidence help interpret the past?
    - Name 7 items that are needed to make fire (in the activity section).
    Then go the the Birth of Archaeology Section.
    Read the articles, play the Hunt the Ancestor game, and do the quiz on archaeology.
    -Please explain 2 things you learned when doing the Hunt the Ancestor game.
    - How did this activity help you better understand archaeology?
