Lesson: Note taking on Sources Other Than Text

Description

The purpose of this lesson is to teach students how to evaluate sources of information other than text. These include photographs, cartoons, posters maps, artifacts, sound recordings, motion pictures. Note: This lesson should be repeated for each of the different type of documents the teacher wishes to cover.

Materials for this Offline lesson:


Copies of Document Analysis Worksheets from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)
Two examples of one of the following types of documents:
  • Photograph
  • Cartoon
  • Poster
  • Map
  • Artifact
  • Sound Recording
  • Video of a Motion Picture
  • Time allotment: 45 minutes

    Grade Level: Grade 4 - 12

    Information Literacy Standard:
    3: The student who is information literate uses information accurately and creatively.

    Learning Outcomes

    Students will know that information can be found in a variety of sources.
    Students will be able to evaluate and take notes from these various sources.

    Set-up

    Provide each student with the appropriate document analysis worksheet. Be sure each student can carefully observe the document.

    Suggested procedure

    As a whole class discuss and fill in the document analysis worksheet. Note: As students use the worksheets for different types of documents have them identify similarities and differences in the kinds of information they are asked to note. Chart their observations on the similarites and differences and display this in the classroom

    Assessment

    Have students individually or in small groups fill in an analysis worksheet for the additional document.
